Therapist Directory Listings and Citations: Which Ones Actually Matter for SEO
Not all directories are created equal — here is where to invest your time.
Not all therapist directory listings are created equal. Some carry genuine SEO weight and will meaningfully strengthen your local search presence. Others are cluttered, low-authority platforms that do little beyond adding another inconsistent mention of your name across the web.
At Cognitive Pulse Marketing, we audit directory listings for every new client we take on. Most practices are either listed in the wrong places, listed inconsistently across the right places, or missing from the directories that matter most.
What Citations Are and Why They Matter
A citation is any online mention of your practice's name, address, and phone number — referred to collectively as NAP. Google uses citations to verify that your practice is legitimate and to understand where you are geographically located.
The two things that matter most about citations are quality and consistency. A handful of citations on high-authority, relevant directories is worth more than dozens on irrelevant platforms. And consistent NAP information across all citations is more valuable than a larger number of listings with variations.
The Directories That Actually Matter
These are the listings worth prioritizing — in order of impact.
Psychology Today
The single most valuable directory listing for most therapy practices. It has one of the highest domain authority scores of any mental health-focused website. A link from PT passes meaningful authority to your domain. It ranks on its own in Google for thousands of therapy-related searches. And therapy clients genuinely use it. The ~$30/month fee is one of the highest-ROI investments available.
Healthgrades
A general healthcare directory with strong domain authority. It ranks in Google for many therapy and healthcare-related searches. Unlike PT, Healthgrades listings are often auto-generated — claim yours and verify its accuracy.
Google Business Profile
Technically Google's own platform rather than a third-party directory, your GBP listing is both your most important local citation and your most important local SEO asset. The NAP in your GBP is the primary reference point against which Google cross-checks all other directory information.
TherapyDen
Growing steadily in traffic and search authority. Particularly strong for practices serving specific communities — LGBTQ+ clients, clients seeking social justice-informed approaches. A meaningful traffic source beyond just a citation.
Zocdoc, Yelp, and Local Directories
Zocdoc drives bookings in markets where it has consumer adoption. Yelp provides a solid citation and quality backlink. Local directories — your chamber of commerce, local business associations, community health directories — carry geographic specificity that national directories cannot replicate. These are often overlooked but consistently valuable for local pack rankings.
The Directories That Are Not Worth Prioritizing
Generic directories like YellowPages, Manta, and Superpages provide minimal citation value. Directories that charge significant monthly fees without demonstrating real consumer traffic or domain authority should be evaluated skeptically — the Psychology Today fee is justified by genuine authority and consumer adoption; most other paid directories are not.
Auditing and Maintaining Your Citations
Before building new citations, audit what already exists.
How to Audit
Search Google for your practice name and review every listing. Note any NAP variations. Use a tool like Whitespark or BrightLocal for a more comprehensive audit. The cleanup process — correcting NAP across existing listings — typically produces faster ranking improvements than building new listings.
Maintaining Consistency Over Time
Review your primary listings at least once a year and any time your practice information changes. A business address change needs to propagate to every directory. For a detailed walkthrough, see our post on NAP consistency for therapists.
